About

Soprano Kayleen Sánchez has been praised by Fanfare for her “perfect voice, pure and unshakably direct in delivery”and a “suppleness that renders each pitch precise, no matter the tuning.” Lauded by poet Sherod Santos for her “keen technical virtuosity... [and] voice that thrills along the spine,” Sánchez is an acclaimed recitalist, pedagogue, research-led performer, and recording artist celebrated for her mastery across bleeding-edge contemporary works, Renaissance masterworks, and standard art song literature.

A leading champion of 21st-century music, Sánchez specializes in complex modern compositions, quarter-tonal repertoire, and multi-instrumental performance. She is a 2026 American Prize Finalist in Chamber Music Performance alongside pianist Paul Sánchez and violinist Eka Gogichashvili for their rendition of David M. Gordon’s Mysteria Incarnationis—a quarter-tonal song cycle set in ancient Syriac in which Sánchez doubles on toy piano, vibra-tone, finger cymbals, Thai button gongs, and water globe. Her groundbreaking work also includes Paul Sánchez’s NEFERTARI, a 62-minute epic for soprano, prepared piano, and sistrum sung in ancient Egyptian. For NEFERTARI, Sánchez created the complete International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcription derived from vocalizations rooted in the research of Egyptologist Edmund Meltzer; the work was awarded 2nd Prize in the 2025 American Prize Charles Ives Award for Vocal Chamber Music.

Sánchez’s vocal agility and linguistic rigor have made her a favorite collaborator for prominent contemporary composers, including David M. Gordon, Edward Hart, Yiorgos Vassilandonakis, and Graham Lynch. Her upcoming recording projects include an album of art songs by Graham Lynch and the premiere recording of a new song cycle composed for her by David M. Gordon, based on Beck’s Song Reader.

Her deep devotion to early music is anchored by extensive research into Original Pronunciation (OP) of Elizabethan English, a field she has spearheaded in performance since 2014. As co-founder of the lute-song duo BEDLAM alongside lutenist Dr. Laudon Schuett—praised by Fanfare as “magical” and by the Lute Society of America for their “subtle and delicate interaction”—she has released several acclaimed albums, including Died for Love (Soundset Recordings, 2017) and a joiful yule (Imaginary Animals Records, 2025).

Equally at home in standard art song and ensemble repertoire, Sánchez brings equal nuance to Schubert, Schumann, and Debussy, exemplified in her historical performance recording of Schubert’s Schwanengesang with fortepianist Johnandrew Slominski. As an ensemble soloist, her recent discography includes the 2025 album All is Miracle (Navona Records) with the choral ensemble Transept. Season highlights include performances with the Grammy-winning choral ensemble Conspirare, alongside appearances with True Concord and a guest residency at Shenandoah Conservatory.

Sánchez earned her Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music, studying under Carol Webber and Rita Shane. She previously served on the vocal faculty at the College of Charleston.

"The premiere of my ‘Sappho Fragments’, given by Kayleen and Paul Sánchez, was one of the best first performances I’ve ever been fortunate enough to have. Not only was there a complete technical command of the music and fabulous attention to detail, but there was also a deep understanding of what I’d written. The result was that the music came alive in exactly the way I intended, and was full of colour, tonal shading, and vitality. A beautiful performance."

– Graham Lynch, composer

“Kayleen Sánchez' wonderfully sensitive interpretations evoke the full sway of Sappho’s fervent, impassioned imagination. Indeed, Sánchez' keen technical virtuosity manages to capture the finely shaded gradations of emotion that all three song cycles draw up from the well of human experience. Listen closely and you’ll discover that, long after the final syllable is sung, her voice still thrills along the spine.”

"This is one of the most beautiful discs in my collection.... Soprano Kayleen Sánchez has the perfect voice, pure and unshakably direct in delivery.... The gradual journey from resignation and regret to hope [in Paul Sánchez' "Magus"] is experienced as an opening out of the human spirit; Kayleen Sánchez’s purity of voice and total control of her instrument is utterly remarkable. Haunting in the extreme, the 23-minute song cycle Magus will be with you for a long time afterwards...."
